Mosimane confident Sundowns will defend PSL title

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane has predicted that his team will not lose again before the league season is concluded.

Pitso Mosimane believes that his Mamelodi Sundowns will finish the Premiership season strongly and backed the team to defend their title.

Mosimane backs his strong finishing Sundowns

Mosimane is unfazed by the gap between Sundowns and league leaders Kaizer Chiefs. The Brazilians are four points adrift of Amakhosi but crucially have a game in hand.

The situation bears a marked resemblance to last season when Sundowns made up ground on Orlando Pirates, overtaking them in the final few games and holding on to win the title on the final day of the season.

Sundowns have a game in hand by virtue of competing in the Caf Champions League. Downs made the last eight of the competition this season being eliminated by Al Ahly 3-1 on aggregate after losing 2-0 in Cairo. Last term Sundowns beat Al Ahly in the quarterfinals before being knocked out at the semi-final.

Targeting the treble

Mosimane has been keen for his team to compete on all fronts, picking strong teams in every competition. Sundowns are hunting a domestic treble having claimed the Telkom Knockout trophy and progressing to the Nedbank Cup semi-finals.

“I remember last year; we were fighting for the league with Orlando Pirates. At this point in time, I remember we were in Morocco,” Mosimane told Kick Off earlier this week.

“I think we were seven or eight points behind, but Pirates had played three or two more games. We managed to come back and do it.

“I am happy that at home we have been winning games. I like the confidence and string of wins because I am waiting for the last five games.

“We will go five in a row (unbeaten), that one I can guarantee. Last five, we will go five in a row.”

Coronavirus threatens title defence

It is unclear when or if the season will restart but it will not be before 4 April, the date set by SAFA this week. SAFA and the PSL will assess the developing situation and make adjustments.

Sundowns might be denied a shot at the Nedbank Cup if the PSL opt to suspend other competitions in favour of finishing the league season before they run out of time.
